On 16 November, Minister for Planning, Lands, Housing and Works John Carey announced the State Government’s plan to create an initial 10 station precincts aimed at promoting high-density development near train stations. Bassendean Station was named as one of the first precincts.
The Town and the Bassendean community have embraced higher density development particularly in the CBD and along the rail corridor for many years and this is reflected in our local planning scheme, LPS 11.
The Town, whilst not aware of this announcement, is cautiously optimistic that it can continue to work with the Minister and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage to expediate higher density residential development in the Town.
The Town, together with the State and Federal Governments, has recently enabled a 73-unit development at 1 Park Lane Bassendean (opposite Bassendean Train Station) which is scheduled to commence construction in 2026.
The Town has three train stations within its boundary—Ashfield, Bassendean and Success Hill—and is keen to discuss how this latest announcement could serve as a catalyst for development at the already identified sites in Bassendean, as well as support the planning work for higher-density development around Ashfield Station, while preserving the heritage values of each area.
