Verge Collect

From January 2026, the Town of Bassendean is moving from a skip bin service to a pre-booked loose verge collection service, called Verge Collect, with WA Recycling Services as the new contractor.

Collections will start from 12 January.

From January to June 2026, each household will be eligible for:

  • 1 pre-booked loose verge collection (general or green), and
  • 2 bulky item collections (large whitegoods, couches/ lounges and/or mattresses)

From July 2026 onwards, each household will be eligible for:

  • 2 loose verge collections per financial year – either 1 general waste and 1 green waste, or 2 green waste.
  • 3 bulky item collections (large whitegoods, couches/ lounges and/or mattresses)

This service is for residential properties paying a waste charge only.

Bulky items like white goods, mattresses, and lounges will still be booked and collected separately, but from January this will be done by WA Recycling Services. The last date for the whitegoods/ mattresses/ lounges collection with Veolia is 29 December.

Kerbside bin collections stay the same and will continue to be handled by Veolia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do with items that are still usable?

If your items are still in good condition, consider giving them a second life before booking a collection. Here are some easy ways to pass them on:

  • Join your local Facebook Buy Nothing group
  • List items on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace
  • Donate to a charity

Find more ideas for reusing or gifting items.

How many collections can I book?

From January to June 2026, each household will get one pre-booked loose verge collection (general or green).

From July 2026 onwards, residents will receive 2 collections per financial year – either general or green (residents can opt for both to be green waste, but not both general waste).

This service is for residential properties only.

Can I book more than one collection at a time?

If you have allocations available, you can book multiple collections in one go. Check your allocation by searching your address on the verge collect booking page.

What do I do when I've run out of collections?

Property owners are issued with 2 tip vouchers per financial year (QR codes printed on bottom of your E-rates or rates notice issued in July).

The tip vouchers can be redeemed for 300kg (trailer load) of green waste or mixed waste, at either Baywaste Community Recycling Centre ($16 surcharge) or Red Hill Waste Management Facility.

A range of items are also accepted either as free drop off items or as per EMRC’s Fees & Charges. Find out more about tip vouchers.

I don't want to use my verge. Where else can I place my items for collection?

If you don’t want items sitting on your verge, or there is no space due to vegetation, please contact WA Recycling Services on 08 9452 0146 to discuss alternative collection locations.

Please note that the collection team are unable to enter your property. They will not come past your letterbox.

Where does the waste go once collected?

Once your waste is collected, it’s sorted offsite to recover as many materials as possible.

  • General waste goes to the Red Hill Waste Management Facility.
  • Green waste also goes to Red Hill, where it’s chipped for reuse.
  • E-waste is recycled, and white goods are processed as scrap metal.
  • Mattress coils are also recycled.

By separating items like appliances, metals, whitegoods and mattresses from your furniture or general junk, you’re helping us recycle more and reduce landfill.

Why did we change from skip bins to Verge Collect?

In mid-2024, we asked our community how they’d like verge collections to work in the future.

Most people surveyed (63% of 875 responses) told us they preferred a pre-booked loose verge collection over skip bins.

You told us it’s easier to place items on the verge, encourages reuse and recycling while the items are there, and helps us to recover more materials once the items are collected.

Based on this feedback, Council resolved to introduce a pre-booked verge collection service.
