The Waste Authority WA has introduced updated guidance for Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) bins.
The updated guidance aims to make waste sorting simpler, reduce contamination and produce cleaner, higher-quality compost that can be used for farms, parks and gardens.
Under the updated guidance, only food scraps, garden organics and certified compostable kitchen caddy liners should be placed in the lime green-lidded FOGO bin.
Some items previously accepted in FOGO bins, can now start going into the red-lid general waste bin, including:
- paper towels
- tissues
- shredded paper
- pet waste
- food-soiled pizza boxes
- compostable takeaway packaging
- tea bags
Placing the right items into the right bin helps to ensure more organic waste can be processed into high-quality compost and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Town residents are already going a good job of sorting waste into the right bins, with our waste audits showing consistently low levels of contamination.
There are no other changes to the FOGO system, with bins, collection schedule and collection days remaining the same.
We will share information over the coming months to educate and support local households during the transition to the updated FOGO guidelines.
