At its Ordinary Council Meeting on 26 May 2026, Council endorsed its new five-year Public Health Plan 2026-2031 (PHP).
Prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Public Health Act 2016 and aligned with the Western Australian State Public Health Plan 2025-2030, the PHP provides a strategic framework to guide the Town’s public health priorities and initiatives. Through its implementation, the Town aims to support a healthy, liveable and socially connected community.
Development of the PHP involved an assessment of local health needs, population characteristics and the broader determinants of health that influence community wellbeing. It identifies key priority areas and outlines actions aimed at improving health outcomes for residents.
Focus areas include promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles, supporting mental health and social wellbeing, strengthening community connectedness, and maintaining effective public health protection and regulatory services.
Many of the actions identified in the PHP build on work already being undertaken by the Town through community development programs, recreation and open space planning, environmental health services, community events and advocacy programs.
The PHP provides a coordinated approach to these activities, establishing clear priorities and actions to improve community health and wellbeing over the next five years. It also recognises the importance of partnerships with government agencies, community organisations, health service providers and local stakeholders in achieving positive public health outcomes.
By endorsing the Public Health Plan 2026–2031, Council has established a clear direction for the Town's ongoing efforts to promote and protect community health. It will support the Town in responding to emerging public health challenges, identifying opportunities for improvement, and delivering initiatives that contribute to a healthier, more connected and resilient community.
Implementation of the PHP will occur over the next five years, with progress monitored and reported in accordance with legislative requirements. Through continued collaboration with the community and key partners, the Town will work towards achieving better health and wellbeing outcomes for Bassendean residents.
