Highlights from the August Ordinary Council Meeting are below.

Town of Bassendean Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) endorsed

Following a period of public consultation, Council endorsed the Town’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2026 – 2031.

Building on previous RAPs and continuing the Town’s reconciliation journey, the 2026-2031 RAP aims to foster strong connections with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) communities and individuals. It is grounded in recognition of Bassendean as Whadjuk Noongar Boodja and the enduring connection of Noongar people to the area.

The Town conducted initial community consultation on the draft RAP in 2025 to assist in developing the draft and then again throughout June and July this year to finalise the Plan with positive feedback requiring minimal changes.

The 2025-2031 RAP prioritises clearly defined, measurable activities that the Town can implement while fulfilling its commitment to strengthen relationships, respect and connections.

Changes to Community Funding Policy endorsed

Council endorsed changes to the Town’s Community Funding Policy following a scheduled review.

Changes include streamlined assessments and approvals, higher grant limits to reflect cost increases and encourage applications as well as improving timeframes for applications.

The revised policy also introduces Commercial CCTV rebates for commercial properties up to $500.

These changes deliver a modernised, simplified community funding framework that will improve administrative efficiency, strengthen governance arrangements, and align funding decisions with the Council Plan.

Electronic Attendance, Livestreaming and Recording of Council Meeting Policy endorsed

Council endorsed a new Electronic Attendance, Livestreaming and Recording of Council Meeting Policy, replacing the previous policy to reflect changes to the Local Government (Administration) Regulations 1996.

The new policy was adapted from WALGA guidelines to suit the Town’s requirements.

Following consultation with Elected Members, the new Policy includes changes to clarify requirements for Members to attend Council meetings electronically.
