The Future of 1 Surrey Street

On 27 July 2021, Council resolved to sell 1 Surrey Street, Bassendean to the Perth History Association Inc (t/a Museum of Perth). The property, which accommodates the Pensioner Guard Cottage and associated residence, will be sold for $1, but with conditions to ensure ongoing community access and heritage restoration. The sale came about in response to an Expression of Interest process conducted in June this year. This resulted in two interested parties formally lodging applications. Whilst the Town received a number of objections, the decision was made on the basis that the proposal would deliver a much-anticipated restoration and maintain the community’s valued access to the site. It expected that the refurbishment will be complete within four years of the sale, which will be late 2025.

This decision was made after much consideration by Council to ensure:

  • Minimal financial imposition on our small base of ratepayers
  • Continued community access to the site with potential for significantly more access than at present
  • Enhanced opportunity to share and celebrate our history with plans for local history research being undertaken by staff and volunteers and exhibitions
  • Restoration and preservation of the historical buildings by a reputable Perth organisation with experience and expertise in heritage sites
  • Bassendean Historical Society and Bassendean Arts Community being offered office / storage space
