The Town will progress ecozoning initiatives at Mary Crescent Reserve following successful funding through the Gnangara Waterwise Councils Grants Program, a joint initiative between the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) and Water Corporation.
The program supports local governments transitioning towards more sustainable groundwater use while responding to increasing climate pressures, including urban heat impacts and a future 10% reduction in groundwater allocation by 2028.
Ecozoning helps diversify park landscapes by enhancing underutilised areas while maintaining key recreational spaces. Selected lower-use areas will be improved through installation of mulch and tree planting to reduce irrigation demand and support long-term environmental sustainability.
The ecozoning is generally consistent with the habitat gardens proposed in the 2020 “Our Park Our Place” Mary Crescent Reserve Landscape Concept Plan and retains areas of grassed open space for off lead dog exercise, with access still possible through the ecozoned area.
Works will include the planting of up to 30 new trees to increase shade and canopy cover, along with mulch treatments to improve soil moisture retention and water efficiency and kerb installation. These improvements will help reduce reliance on groundwater while creating cooler and more resilient community space.
Site works are scheduled to commence in March and will be completed by June (weather permitting).
This initiative forms part of the Town’s ongoing commitment to waterwise practices and the delivery of sustainable, climate-resilient public open spaces for the community.
