Update on tree health at Bassendean Oval - 4 May 2026

Following an assessment and despite efforts over the past two months to promote recovery, it has been confirmed by an independent Consulting Arborist that the large tree at the north-eastern end of Bassendean Oval will not recover.

Tree removal is scheduled to be completed on Friday 8 May with the logs retained for use in the Town’s natural areas and parks as habitat logs. Due to the location, it is not suitable to retain the dead tree in place.

The Town is reviewing potential locations at nearby Parks/Reserves for additional tree planting this winter, to offset the lost canopy.

The Town of Bassendean is closely monitoring the condition of a large tree at the north‑eastern end of Bassendean Oval, near the carpark.

In recent weeks, the tree has shown signs of declining health. During the recent lighting upgrade project, the Town followed a specialist Tree Protection Report and put several measures in place to protect the tree. These included:

  • avoiding any excavation within the tree’s Structural Root Zone (SRZ)
  • carefully exposing roots next to the SRZ using a radial-pattern excavation
  • using clean, sharp tools to cut small roots (under 50mm)
  • preserving larger roots (over 50mm) by digging around them when installing conduit
  • providing additional watering throughout the project.

Once the tree’s decline became noticeable, the Town’s Urban Forest Team increased care efforts. This has included more frequent watering and applying Seasol, wetting agents, trace elements and soil microbes to support the tree’s recovery.

Although it is too early to know whether the tree will fully recover, the Town is taking all reasonable steps to give it the best chance of survival.

Temporary fencing and signage have been installed, in consultation with Swan Districts Football Club, to help protect the tree.

The Town will continue to monitor the tree over the coming months. Once its condition becomes clearer, a decision will be made on whether the tree can be safely retained or if it will need to be removed.
