This International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), the Town of Bassendean is proud to announce its participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a global initiative designed to support people living with non-visible disabilities.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program helps raise awareness of the daily challenges faced by people with disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as autism, chronic pain, dementia, anxiety, or sensory impairments. By wearing a Sunflower lanyard or badge, individuals can discreetly indicate that they may need additional assistance, time, or understanding.
For the Town’s frontline staff, the Sunflower symbol serves as a clear sign to provide extra support when needed. Residents can also identify trained staff who are ready to assist, ensuring everyone can navigate services confidently and comfortably.
According to the 2021 Census, around 16% of Bassendean’s population - approximately 2,600 people - live with disability. Of these people, 5% require assistance with core activities, and 6.3% experience profound or severe limitations, a figure higher than the WA average.
These statistics highlight the importance of initiatives that make services more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
As a new member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, the Town joins a growing network of Western Australian organisations committed to fostering a more responsive and inclusive community.
Staff and volunteers across key public-facing roles including library services, customer service and rangers have attended training and information sessions to ensure the program’s success.
Mayor Kath Hamilton said the Town was proud to join the Program.
“This initiative is about making sure everyone in our community feels supported and understood, especially those living with disabilities that aren’t immediately visible,” said Mayor Hamilton.
“By training our staff and volunteers, we’re taking an important step toward creating a more inclusive Bassendean where everyone can access our services with confidence.”
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program strongly aligns with the Town’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2024–2028 (DAIP), which sets out seven key outcome areas to ensure people with disability have equal access and opportunity.
