Success Hill Drainage Diversion Project begins

The Town of Bassendean has started the Success Hill Drainage Diversion Project, delivering sustainable infrastructure while protecting the environment and cultural heritage.

For eight years, the Town has sought a permanent solution to manage surface water runoff from the upstream residential catchment. The temporary pipe at Success Hill Reserve foreshore will soon be replaced with a long-term system that safeguards this registered Aboriginal Heritage Site.

Instead of large-scale excavation, the Town is using trenchless technology. A horizontal drill at Kelly Park will install a new drainage pipe beneath Eighth Avenue, reducing surface disruption and preserving trees and vegetation.

Construction began on 24 November 2025 and is expected to take six weeks. Traffic management will be in place on Eighth Avenue and Anzac Terrace, and Kelly Park will serve as a laydown area with Tree Protection Areas identified.

This approach:

  • protects Success Hill Reserve’s cultural significance
  • minimises environmental impact
  • provides a reliable, low-maintenance drainage system.

The project also supports future foreshore stabilisation and removal of the temporary pipe.
