Non-operational lighting along Midland Line shared path

The Town of Bassendean has received several enquiries regarding the non-operational Principal Shared Path (PSP) lighting along the Midland Line adjacent to Railway Parade.

We understand the community’s frustration and appreciate your concerns. To clarify, this lighting infrastructure is owned and managed by Main Roads WA, not the Town.

In response to community concerns, the Town has contacted Main Roads to seek an update on the status of repairs.

Main Roads has advised that the outage is due to widespread copper cable theft across the network. They are implementing improved theft-deterrent measures, with new products scheduled for installation from 2026 onwards.

Currently, restoration works are being prioritised on sites along Kwinana Freeway, before progressing to PSP locations. Main Roads has confirmed that PSP lighting restoration is a high priority and is planned for 2026–27. Timelines may change depending on theft activity, compliance requirements, and resource constraints. The scale of theft has significantly impacted their ability to complete repairs within ideal timeframes.

Main Roads is working closely with WA Police to investigate cable theft and prosecute offenders. In the meantime, the community can assist by reporting suspicious activity to WA Police, where safe to do so.

We appreciate you bringing your concerns to our attention and thank you for your patience as Main Roads works towards restoring lighting along the PSP network.
