Recycling just got simpler and more rewarding for Town of Bassendean residents and visitors.
A new Containers for Change Self-serve Kiosk, operated by TOMRA, is now open at BIC Reserve, providing a quick and convenient way to turn eligible beverage containers into instant refunds.
The kiosk is located opposite the Bassendean Bowling Club, with nearby parking and easy access from Guildford Road. It will be open 363 days a year (closed Good Friday and Christmas Day), making recycling available almost year-round.
Users can choose to receive their refund as a retail voucher redeemable for discounts or cash at Coles, a digital transfer to their bank account via their Containers for Change member number or donate it to a charity through Containers for Change WA.
The Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) can take up to 100 containers per minute and uses advanced scanning technology to identify and sort containers by barcode, material, or shape.
Town of Bassendean Mayor Kath Hamilton said: “This initiative makes recycling easier and more rewarding for our community. By placing the reverse vending machine at BIC Reserve, we’re encouraging sustainable habits while providing a convenient way for residents to benefit from the Container Deposit Scheme. It’s a win for the environment and for Bassendean."
Member for Bassendean Dave Kelly said: “Containers for Change has been a highly successful program with more than 4.5 billion containers collected since it’s launch in 2020.
This new reverse vending machine will make it even easier for the community to engage with the program while they’re out and about and continue recycling.”
TOMRA General Manager - WA Stephen Blechynden said: “TOMRA is thrilled to have been given the opportunity to collaborate with the Town of Bassendean, showcasing our continued commitment to sustainability and supporting the community through convenient and efficient ways to refund and recycle.’’
CEO WA Return Recycle Renew Limited (WARRRL) Tim Cusack said “We are very excited to be launching our latest self-serve kiosk in Bassendean. The Bassendean kiosk is in a great location, close to amenities, with plenty of parking, creating a convenient, new way for the local community to return their containers.”
The RVM supports Containers for Change, which has already diverted more than 4.8 billion containers from landfill since its launch in 2020.
With expansion to include wine and spirit bottles from July 2026, almost all beverage containers between 150 millilitres and 3 litres will be eligible for a 10-cent refund.
