From September, mosquito activity increases – especially during mornings and evenings – as freshwater mosquitoes begin emerging from containers, drains, and standing water around homes.
It’s not just backyard mozzies to watch out for. Between January and April, salt marsh mosquitoes like Aedes vigilax also appear. These mosquitoes breed in tidal wetlands along the Swan River and can travel several kilometres, meaning even homes away from the river aren’t safe from their bite.
We’re getting ready to ramp up our monitoring and treatment efforts as the warmer weather rolls in, but we need your help to fight the bite.
Now’s the time to check your yard for standing water and take action to reduce mosquito breeding. Here’s some suggestions:
- Make sure fly screens are in good shape
- Get rid of containers that hold water
- Keep pools clean and chlorinated
- Cover septic tank vents and seal gaps
- Screen rainwater tanks and keep gutters clear
- Empty pot plant trays weekly or fill with sand
- Clean pet water bowls weekly
