The Town of Bassendean has appointed Christou Design Group to progress the Bassendean Oval Precinct Redevelopment to the schematic design stage. This is a critical step that will translate the community-endorsed concept masterplan into detailed plans and costings.

Funded through a $500,000 grant from the WA Government, the architect was appointed through a competitive procurement process to deliver Stage 2 of the project: schematic design to support future funding bids and project approvals.

Bassendean Oval is a significant local sporting and community precinct and has been the home of Swan Districts Football Club for almost 100 years. Council is working to modernise the precinct to better serve the club, local sporting groups and the wider community, while retaining and celebrating the site’s heritage features.

The redevelopment will deliver modern, inclusive football and community facilities at Bassendean Oval, while protecting key heritage elements and improving connections to the town centre, station, river and shops. It will also explore complementary civic and commercial uses and opportunities for mixed-use development to support a more vibrant, accessible and financially sustainable precinct.

Schematic design will test and refine the precinct layout, building form and functionality, accessibility and inclusion outcomes, traffic and parking solutions, and sustainability opportunities. It will also provide updated cost estimates to inform an independent Treasury business case.

During this stage, the design team will carry out key technical work, including traffic and transport studies, site and underground investigations (such as geotechnical and drainage), and refining the project staging options.

To keep the project moving within the current budget, Council will complete schematic design to an agreed 60% which will provide enough detail for accurate cost estimates to inform the development of the Treasury business case.

Mayor Kath Hamilton said the appointment marks an important milestone for the project.

“Moving into schematic design puts Council in a much stronger position to confidently advocate for funding,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“Our community has told us what they value about Bassendean Oval, and this next phase is about turning those ideas into practical, achievable designs. It’s an important step toward delivering facilities that work for today and future generations while respecting the oval’s long history.”
