The Public Transport Authority will soon begin works to install temporary infrastructure at Bassendean Station to support train replacement bus operations. These essential works will prepare Bassendean Station for an upcoming Midland Line shutdown in early-2026.
The Midland Line will be closed between Bassendean and Midland from Thursday 22 January to Sunday 22 February 2026 to complete essential works for the new METRONET Midland Station. During this time, train replacement buses will operate, and services will resume from the new station once works are complete.
The additional infrastructure will allow for bus replacement services to operate from Bassendean Station during the rail shutdown, as the current interchange does not have enough bus stands or supporting infrastructure to manage that demand. The temporary infrastructure is necessary to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe services for passengers.
Works at Bassendean Station will include:
- Installation of temporary infrastructure to support train replacement bus operations
- Modification and relocation of the existing motorcycle shelter – west of the current location
- Occupation of approximately 85 parking bays (closest to the bus interchange) until March 2026
- ACROD bays will not be impacted
- Relocation of the drop-off/pick-up area – west of the ACROD bays
- Construction fencing to secure the work area throughout the works
If out-of-hours works are required during the duration of the works a separate notice will be issued to residents. All out-of-hours work will follow a noise management plan approved by the Town of Bassendean. While every effort will be made to minimise noise, some disturbance may be unavoidable.
Works are expected to start on November 17 and are expected to take approximately four weeks. The temporary bus infrastructure will be in place until March 2026.
During the Midland Line shutdown in early-2026 traffic management will be in place on Railway Parade and adjacent streets near Bassendean Station. This will follow an approved Traffic Management Plan.
During the shutdown the Morrison Road level crossing in Midland will also be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 12.30am on Thursday, 22 January and 12.00pm on Sunday, 22 February (times subject to change). Please see map below for information on road detours and alternative routes.

Passengers should expect some noise and traffic impacts as works progress.

Midland Line shutdown and temporary closure of Morrison Road level crossing - FAQs
Why is the Midland Line shutting down, and what works will take place?
The Midland Line will shut down for 31-days to allow for completion of the final rail and civil works required to connect to the new Midland Station. During this period, intensive construction activity will occur 24/7 across multiple locations, including the Morrison Road level crossing.
Critical rail and civil works may result in temporary impacts such as noise, heavy vehicle movements, dust, vibration, and light spill. These will be carefully managed using mitigation measures such as noise sound mats, monitoring, water suppression, and strategic placement of construction lighting.
What train services will be impacted during the shutdown?
Trains will be cancelled on the Midland Line between Bassendean and Midland stations from first service Thursday 22 January until Sunday 22 February 2026. Train replacement bus services will operate between Bassendean and Midland during the closure. Information on train replacement services will be available on www.transperth.wa.gov.au.
Due to the unavailability of the Transwa train platform at Midland Station, all Prospector, AvonLink and MerredinLink services will not stop at Midland Station from Saturday, 3 January to Sunday, 22 February 2026. Passengers should use East Perth Terminal as the alternative departure and arrival location during this time. For more information contact Transwa:1300 662 205 | www.transwa.wa.gov.au
When will passengers be able to access the new Midland Station?
Midland’s new station is expected to open on 22 February 2026.
Why does the Morrison Road level crossing need to close?
The Morrison Road level crossing will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians during this period. This closure is necessary to decommission the existing signal equipment room, complete track realignment and ensure public safety.
An alternative pedestrian route will be available via the Woodbridge Station underpass.
Why can’t access at the Morrison Road level crossing be maintained?
Access across Morrison Road can’t be maintained during this time because construction vehicles will be using the crossing frequently, and some safety controls will be turned off, which increases the risk to the public. The crossing is also part of the active construction zone, and with the freight rail network still in operation, the area becomes even more hazardous. Due to the scale of the work and limited safe space, it is not safe for pedestrians or vehicles to pass through.
