As part of the Ashfield Flats Master Plan, the Town is installing fencing around the saltmarsh, which is a nationally-recognised Threatened Ecological Community (TEC).
This fencing will help protect these sensitive areas from accidental damage and give the saltmarsh space to grow and thrive.
Following discussions with land managers and inspecting the site, the original fence layout shown in the Master Plan has been updated to balance environmental protection with access requirements.
The updates include:
- Keeping the walking track open between the end of Whitfield Street and Ashfield Flats.
- A new diagonal fence section will replace the old alignment to safeguard young samphire plants growing along the current track. The new walking path will be on higher ground, making it easier to use.
- A small section of fence on the southern edge has been moved slightly to include another patch of samphire.
The new fencing will be a star picket fence with ring lock mesh and a single top wire and include four to six metre gaps between fenced areas to provide access to walkers and emergency vehicles.
Fence construction will begin at the end of October.
This project is funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program, with support of Town of Bassendean, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Bassendean Preservation Group.
