Two outstanding contributors to the Town of Bassendean have been recognised at the 2025 WALGA Local Government Honours Awards, held on Saturday night.

Long-serving Councillor Jennie Carter and Environmental Health Officer Jeff Somes were each presented with Merit Awards, acknowledging their exceptional service to local government and the community.

Cr Carter’s award recognises her long-standing commitment to community advocacy, historical preservation, and civic leadership across multiple decades. With three terms on Council: 1987–1990, 2011–2015, and 2021 to present, she has been a steadfast advocate for heritage protection, social history, and local governance. Her 1986 donation of key research materials helped establish the Town’s Local Studies Collection, now a vital resource for the community.

“Jennie’s dedication to Bassendean is truly remarkable,” said Mayor Kathryn Hamilton. “She brings deep knowledge, historical perspective, and a tireless work ethic to her role as councillor. Her contributions, both past and ongoing, have shaped the way we understand and serve our community.”

Environmental Health Officer Jeff Somes was recognised for more than 20 years of service in local government and his continued leadership in public and environmental health. Since joining the Town in 2018, Jeff has led critical initiatives including mosquito management, food safety, and disability access planning, while mentoring emerging professionals in the field.

“Jeff is one of those quiet achievers whose work has a lasting impact on our community’s health and wellbeing,” said CEO Cameron Woods. “His dedication goes beyond the call of duty, whether he’s training junior staff or wading through summer mud to monitor mosquito sites. This award is well deserved.”

The Town of Bassendean congratulates both Cr Carter and Mr Somes on this well-earned recognition and thanks them for their invaluable contributions.
