The Town of Bassendean has completed a major lighting upgrade at Steel Blue Oval, enhancing safety, boosting energy efficiency, and allowing greater access to the beloved community venue for local teams and residents alike.
The project has transformed outdated lighting infrastructure into a modern 200 Lux LED system, with future capability to upgrade to 500 Lux.
The lighting upgrade not only provides safer conditions for evening training sessions, but also dramatically reduces maintenance and operating costs through improved energy efficiency.
With four new floodlight towers in place, the upgraded oval will support a broader range of uses, including women’s and integrated football, junior and senior competitions, coach and umpire education, and Swan Districts Football Club’s community outreach programs.
Federal Member for Hasluck Tania Lawrence said: “what a great day for Bassendean, with the community now able to enjoy and reap the benefits of the increased lighting at Steel Blue Oval.
“This is yet another demonstration of the Albanese Labor Government delivering not only on our election commitments, but on our broader commitment to develop Australian communities – including by funding projects like this that build opportunity and improve liveability.
I’m happy to see this delivered, so local teams can benefit from improvements to safety during evening practice.”
State Member for Bassendean Dave Kelly said: “These upgrades will be a great improvement for Steel Blue Oval allowing for longer and safer use of the oval.
I’m very pleased to be a part of the Cook Labor Government which has a strong commitment to provide improved lighting to community sport facilities.
The State Government has now provided the Town of Bassendean with $55,394 for upgraded lighting at Ashfield Reserve, $570,000 for Jubilee Reserve and, most recently, $350,581 for Steel Blue Oval.”
Mayor Kathryn Hamilton welcomed the project as a vital step forward in delivering the Town’s vision for a more active and inclusive community.
“This is a win for local sport and a win for the wider Bassendean community,” said Mayor Hamilton.
“Better lighting means more people can enjoy using the oval safely after dark. It also opens the door to a greater range of community activities, events and gatherings in our town centre.”
The project marks one of the first stages in delivering the Town’s Bassendean Oval Master Plan, which sets out a long-term vision for the revitalisation of the precinct as a high-quality, multi-use community space.
“This lighting upgrade is just the beginning,” said Mayor Hamilton. “It lays the groundwork for more inclusive sports participation, exciting night-time events, and a more vibrant, connected community.”
The $1.4 million project was made possible thanks to strong collaboration and co-investment from multiple partners, including through the Federal Government’s Investing in our Communities Program, the State Government, Swan Districts Football Club, Town of Bassendean, and WA Football.
Mayor Hamilton acknowledged and thanked all funding partners for their support.
“This upgrade would not have been possible without the commitment of our project partners. Together, we are delivering long-term benefits to Bassendean’s local sporting clubs, residents, and visitors.”
