Thinking of running for Council? Nominations open soon

The Town of Bassendean is encouraging passionate, community-minded residents from all backgrounds to consider nominating for Council in the upcoming local government election on Saturday 18 October 2025.

With a strong sense of community, rich cultural heritage, and a growing population, the Town is looking for individuals committed to making a positive impact, whether it’s preserving natural spaces, supporting local initiatives, or helping shape the Town’s future.

Town of Bassendean CEO Cameron Woods said strong local representation makes for stronger decision-making.

“We want to see a Council that truly reflects the diversity, values, and aspirations of our community,” Mr Woods said.

“If you care deeply about where you live, are ready to listen to others, and willing to put in the time to understand the issues and contribute to sound decisions, we’d love to see you nominate.”

He reminded prospective candidates that while the role is highly rewarding, it comes with serious responsibilities.

“Councillors need to be committed, available, and engaged. That means showing up to Tuesday night meetings, reading reports, completing the compulsory training modules, and being an active voice in community life. It’s not just a title - it’s a role of service and leadership.”

To support those considering a nomination, WALGA, together with the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) and the WA Electoral Commission, is hosting a Candidate Information Briefing Webinar on Monday 18 August 2025 from 6pm. The session will explain the responsibilities of Councillors, the election process, required training, and the time involved. All community members are welcome.

Nominations open on 28 August and close at 4pm on 4 September 2025. All nominees must complete a mandatory online induction and submit their nomination through the WA Electoral Commission.

Mr Woods also encouraged all residents to play their part in shaping Bassendean’s future by voting.

“Even if you’re not nominating, your voice still matters. Every vote helps build a stronger, more representative Council. I urge everyone to take the time to vote this October.”
