This year the Town’s heritage-listed pillar post box is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
Located on the corner of North Road and Surrey Street, Bassendean, the post box was cast in 1876. While its exact installation date is unknown, the post box has become a familiar and much-loved local landmark.
The post box’s hexagonal design is a variation of the style used in Britain in the mid-nineteenth century; a reminder of the early days of postal communication in WA.
The post box was added to the State Register of Heritage Places in 2018 following a dedicated campaign led by a local community member to preserve this unique piece of Bassendean history.
The Town will mark the post box’s anniversary with a range of community events, including a historical talk, calligraphy workshop and art installation at the Bassendean Memorial Library.
Local primary school students from participating schools are invited to join in the celebrations by taking part in a postcard design and colouring in competition. Winning entries will be turned into commemorative postcards for the community to use.
