2021 Community Awards Recipients

In celebrating National Volunteer Week, the 2021 Community Awards were presented at a special function at the Swan Districts Football Club on Sunday 23 May.

Awards were presented in the following categories, Congratulations to all recipients:

Christina Carey, recipient of The Community Leadership Award, for her leadership of local community group, the Eden Hill Community Action Network. Christina’s work over the past three years has helped to connect the Eden Hill community, and several significant projects have been guided by her leadership, such as the Mary Crescent Wetlands, Eden Hill Lane community mural project, community events, and food drives.


Bassendean SES, recipient of The Volunteer Organisation of the Year Award, for their assistance not only with local and state emergencies, but also their active participation in the community and their engagement with our community’s youth through local scout groups. This year has been particularly busy for our local SES, with the Wooroloo and Red Bluff fires, Cyclone Seroja, and storm damage in Perth.


Pat Butler, first recipient of The Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering Award, for nearly 30 years of volunteering in various organisations around the Town. Most recently, Pat is a committee member of the Bassendean 55 Plus, organising trips and activities for the group and encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle.


Gordon Munday, second recipient of The Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering Award for his long-time volunteering with the Bassendean SES, including significant time as the Local Area Manager.  Sadly, Gordon passed away in late 2019, but he was well-known and liked in our community. The award was presented to Gordon’s wife Ros Munday.


Patrick Gong, first recipient of The Youth Achievement Award, for his exceptional achievements in Chess and his active promotion of chess among junior players.


Jacob Cleverly, second recipient of The Youth Achievement Award, for his commitment to volunteering and his time on the Town’s Youth Advisory Council.


Ulrich Stumpf & Susan Chadwick, recipients of The Best Verge Award, for creating a water-wise verge by replacing lawn with native plants and mulch.


The 5 Four Store on Old Perth Road, recipient of The “Bassendean Means Business” Award, for their sustainable and environmental practices, inclusivity, and excellent customer service.


The Swan Districts Football Club, recipient of The Community Inclusion Award, for establishing community committees to guide the club in its vision for an inclusive community, including their Swans Aboriginal Advisory Committee, the Swans Disability Advocacy Inclusion Sub-committee, and the Swans Young Person Committee. Swans has also partnered with other community groups to establish the Swans Inclusive Participation and Training Project.
