In 2022, residents will once again have the opportunity to purchase native waterwise plants through the Town of Bassendean Plants to Residents Program and can also apply for a rebate to transform their verge into a native waterwise garden. Details for each program are outlined below; residents accepted into the verge program can also buy plants through the Plants to Residents program.

Plants to Residents:

The Town’s Plants to Residents program will continue in 2022, with residents being able to purchase native, water wise plants at a subsidised rate of $1 each through EnviroHouse. Plant vouchers for 10 or 20 plants go on sale Tuesday May 3rd, and can be purchased online (https://www.trybooking.com/867576) , over the phone or in person at EnviroHouse (details below). The plant collection days will be run from the Town of Bassendean depot at 69 Scaddan Street, Bassendean on Saturday June 18th and Sunday June 19th between 9 am and 3 pm, remember to bring your proof of residence and vouchers when collecting plants.

Please note that this will be the only weekend for plant collection, any plants not collected on the day will be forfeited. Whilst the Town and EnviroHouse hopes to allow residents to select their own plants, COVID may require the plants to supplied in prearranged packs and via contactless collection.

Verge Rebate Program:

In 2021 the Town ran a pilot verge rebate program, assisting residents in transforming their verges from grass or hardstand to waterwise gardens. The program was a success, and the Town will be running it again in 2022. Applications for the program will open on Monday April 18th and can be made through the Town of Bassendean website.

The Town has expanded the eligibility criteria to allow for more participants, these criteria include:

  • The verge makeover must comply  with the Town’s Verge Treatment Policy and Verge Treatment Guidelines Verges » Town of Bassendean
  • The applicant must be a Town of Bassendean property owner or strata company. Currently no applications will be accepted from tenants.
  • The verge area to be transformed must be over 20m2
  • Corner blocks may apply, the area to be transformed on at least one of the verges must be over 20m2
  • Battle-axe developments and strata complex/ grouped dwellings where the verge is shared can apply for the rebate but must have written support from the other property owners sharing the verge, stating that they support the verge transformation. This letter of support must come from the property owners or strata company.
  • The current verge must not be an existing native garden.
  • Successful applicants must remove grass or hard surfaces prior to planting, complete all works and submitted the rebate information before 1 September 2022.NOTE: Any applicants accepted into the program who do not complete the transformation by 1 September 2022 will not be able to participate in the program again for the following two years.
  • Successful applicants include 5-10cm of coarse mulch (woodchip or tree prunings) and waterwise plants (local native plants preferred). The Water Corporation's Waterwise Plant Directory (Waterwise Plants Perth & WA | Water Saving & Drought Tolerant Plants (watercorporation.com.au)) and the Town’s Verge Treatments Guidelines (Verges » Town of Bassendean) provide information on some suitable plants.

Both these initiatives are proudly co-funded by Water Corporation’s Waterwise Greening Scheme and forms part of our ambition for Town of Bassendean to be a leading waterwise city
