Consistent with the Town of Bassendean’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the Town has joined the Australian Building Codes Board and other local governments urging Building Ministers to increase energy efficiency standards for new homes nationwide.

A joint statement issued to the Building Ministers’ Meeting proposes an update to the National Construction Code including an increase to the thermal performance standard from 6 to 7 stars.

It also includes the introduction of an ‘energy budget’ for fixed appliances (heating and cooling, hot water, lighting, and pool and spa pumps).

The changes aim to increase the standard of living for Australians to live in safe, healthy, comfortable and affordable homes and is in line with the Trajectory for Low Energy Buildings agreed by all Commonwealth, state and territory Ministers in 2019.

If approved, this will be the first update to energy standards in 12 years, in which time many improvements have been made in building design, materials and technology.

The statement will be presented at the next Building Ministers’ Meeting on 26 August 2022.
