Message from the Mayor

Dear Community Members,

With what appears to be a recent spike in criminal activities targeting certain areas, Town of Bassendean representatives are set to meet with WA Police to request assistance and to discuss ways in which to enhance and create an environment where residents and business owners feel safe.

We also intend to meet with representatives of the Public Transport Authority to discuss the issue of disruptive individuals removed from trains at any of the three stations within our district and left to wander neighbourhoods without any means to travel to their home destinations. I certainly acknowledge that some social issues are complex and not easily addressed, however collaboration between all parties is the starting point to developing solutions.

Young people living in Bassendean and surrounding areas are encouraged to take part in our Youth Services programs operating out of R A McDonald Pavilion at Steel Blue Oval. We will be running a targeted campaign to attract vulnerable youth into the program in 2023.

By creating positive engagement, mentorship, and targeted activities and programs for young people, we can often provide early support, if required, to assist those young people.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage WA Seniors Card members to investigate the Safety and Security Rebate Scheme that allows a claim of up to $400 per household towards the purchase of eligible home security or safety items. The online link outlining this state government initiative is here: Apply for a Safety and Security rebate | Western Australian Government (www.wa.gov.au) To assist eligible seniors to navigate the online application process, the Town of Bassendean offers assistance via our “Cyber Citizens” as part of the Digital Literacy program at the Bassendean Memorial Library. Bookings are essential for this popular service to the community.

Tackling the issue of crime requires a concerted and collaborative approach from us all. Criminals are always motivated by easy targets, so let’s make it harder and lock the door on crooks. Look out for your neighbours, and if you see suspicious or anti-social behaviour occurring, please report it to the WA Police on 131 444, or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 (you can report anonymously), or if it is an emergency dial 000 for urgent assistance.

I would like to reassure community members that we are proactively and regularly engaging with WA Police to address the issue.

Please refer to the Your Safety Statement below for tips on how to stay vigilant against crime, and how to be safe”.

Your Safety | Western Australia Police Force

Yours sincerely,

Mayor Kathryn Hamilton
