Three Bin System: What goes in what bin?

We are rolling out a FOGO (Food Organics & Garden Organics) Three Bin System from August 2020.

The three bin system consists of

  • A 240L lime-green lid FOGO bin, for food scraps and garden waste
    • This bin will also come with a 7L kitchen caddy and a roll of compostable liners -- the bag should be filled with kitchen scraps, tied off and placed into your FOGO bin.
  • A 140L red lid General Waste bin, for waste that can’t be composted or recycled
  • The existing 240L yellow lid Recycling bin

Each of your bins can accept up to 70 kilograms of waste. 

FOGO Bin - Lime Green Lid

If it didn’t live or grow, it’s not FOGO. Only the items listed below, as well as the compostable liners supplied to you with your caddy, should ever go into your FOGO bin

  • Bread and dairy
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Meat, bones, seafood and egg shells
  • Prunings and leaves
  • Dog poo, kitty litter, paper towels, serviettes and tissues

The lime green lid FOGO bin will be collected weekly.

Recycling Bin - Yellow Lid

The following items can be placed in your yellow lidded recycling bin:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Aluminium and steel cans
  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Milk and juice cartons

These items must have lids removed, be clean and placed loosely (not in plastic bags) in your Recycling bin.

General Waste Bin - Red Lid

The following items can be placed in your red lid General Waste bin:

  • Soft plastics
  • Nappies
  • Polystyrene and foam packaging
  • Meat trays
  • Other household waste that cannot go into your FOGO bin or your Recycling bin

The red lid General Waste bin will collected on the alternate fortnight to the Recycling bin, the waste in this bin will go to landfill.

Non Kerbside Items 

There are some household waste items that should not go in any of the bins such as:

  • Hot ash
  • Liquids e.g., cooking oil
  • Batteries – vehicle and household
  • Construction waste e.g. bricks, concrete, sand, soil or similar
  • All CFL or mercury based light bulbs/ tubes
  • Other types of Household Hazardous Waste (mechanical oil, paint, solvents)
