The Town of Bassendean is joining in the global celebrations for International Women's Day (IWD) on 8 March to promote #BalanceforBetter gender equality. The theme of IWD 2019 provides the opportunity for a unified approach in achieving gender equality and to highlight the better the balance, the better the world. Recognising and celebrating the achievements of women everywhere, IWD in 2019 focuses global attention on making a positive difference for women by driving gender equality.

The Town of Bassendean will host an event on 11 March with the Honourable Simone McGurk, MLA, Minister for Child Protection; Women's Interests; Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence; Community Services. The Minister will discuss the State Government's plan for a sustainable and coordinated approach to achieving gender equality in Western Australia. Focussing on key issues for women including safety, health and wellbeing, justice, economic independence and leadership the plan is intended to adopt a strategic approach to addressing issues important to creating strong communities. The Town is honoured to be the first local government to be engaged on the development of a state government plan for women.

The event will also see the Town launch its community engagement strategy, demonstrating the Town's commitment to involving and engaging the community in shaping and planning for the future.

‘Listening to and understanding all of the voices will help us to plan for and achieve an inclusive and strong community – one that meets our needs now and into the future’, stated Renee McLennan, Mayor of the Town of Bassendean.

IWD is an important date to mark the achievements of all women and girls in our community, in our state and across the world. On this IWD, help us to celebrate women's achievements, by joining as a community to recognise and support #BalanceforBetter in gender equality.
