Point Reserve Jetties Update May 2020

At its meeting last night, Council received a structural assessment report on the two Point Reserve jetties.

The jetties were closed late last year for safety reasons following the discovery of termite damage.

Since then, a comprehensive structural assessment has been undertaken of the jetties which has determined both are unsafe for future reinstatement, with a rebuild on the existing pylons no longer deemed feasible.

“In light of this recent and more detailed information, it is very clear that the existing jetties are not salvageable”, said the Mayor, Cr Renée McLennan. “Unfortunately, the jetties need to be removed as the current situation is a risk to our community’s safety.”

“Emerging from this is the opportunity for a rethink, to review the situation and develop a plan for the future of Point Reserve and, more broadly, the Swan River.

“This will allow Council to have a better understanding of the condition of the foreshore but also the chance to reflect on the future places we are creating as a community.

“A more holistic and thoughtful strategy will provide the information required to support any future investment in jetties, foreshore erosion control and river park amenity.”

The Chief Executive Officer will present a scoping paper to Council in the near future to identify options to develop a more holistic and integrated plan that considers the river’s health and provision of high-quality community assets.
