The Town of Bassendean will proceed with a proposal to use a Design Review Panel under a move to improve design quality of future developments.

Mayor Renee McLennan said feedback from residents over the past 18 months highlighted the community's desire for quality design outcomes.

Council this week adopted a Local Planning Policy – Design Review, which acknowledges the agreement between the City of Bayswater and the Town relating to the use of the City of Bayswater's Design Review Panel to undertake design review of applications for significant developments within the Town.

It also outlines the matters to be considered by the Panel when providing advice on planning applications.

A Design Review Panel comprises a group of independent experts that provide impartial architectural and design advice. Assessing design quality as part of the planning approval process allows local authorities to fully harness the opportunities offered by new development and ensures that maximum benefit is delivered to all.

"Improving the design quality of the built environment has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on local communities. Engaging in design review improves the design quality of projects and can speed up the planning process, leading to quicker delivery of high-quality buildings and places that provide a wide range of benefits to occupants, neighbours and the broader community," Cr McLennan said.
