Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony & Community BBQ

Published on Thursday, 14 January 2021 at 10:00:00 AM

Join us in welcoming our newest citizens on Australia Day with a public citizenship and affirmation ceremony, free community BBQ and lawn games at Bassendean’s beautiful Sandy Beach Reserve. A special cultural performance embracing indigenous culture will complete the morning event.

Mayor McLennan encourages community members to “use the day as an opportunity to learn about our journey as a nation and acknowledge our country’s history which began more than 65,000 years ago, the impact of European settlement on our First Australians and the successive waves of immigration that have followed and helped shape Australia into the wonderful multicultural nation it is today. This is a chance for each of us to reflect on what it means to be Australian and part of this wonderful community as well as what we aspire to become in the future.”

8:00am: Free Community BBQ and coffee

9.30am: Welcome to Country and Citizenship Ceremony

10.30am: Performance by the Bindjareb Middar dance troupe

We would like to remind attendees to practice social distancing and appropriate hygiene for COVID-19 safety. If you are unwell or have been directed to self-isolate, please do not attend.

It is advised that you wear sunscreen and a hat, and consider insect repellent as the event is adjacent to the river.
