Whitfield Street Safe Active Street

Background

The Town secured 100% funding from the Department of Transport under their Safe Active Streets program for the design and construction of Whitfield Safe Active Street. After extensive consultation and design development with the Bassendean community, a final design was developed.

The construction works for the Whitfield Safe Active Street project commenced in June 2020 and were completed in October 2020. Currently, the line marking and associated signage is being installed by Main Roads WA. At the completion of these works, Whitfield Street will be a key ‘bike and pedestrian first’ corridor link between the Town Centre and Sandy Beach Reserve. This will include the introduction of a new 30km/hr speed limit along Whitfield Street, which along with additional traffic calming measures will promote the use of alternative modes of transport such as bikes and mobility scooters etc.

Latest Work Completed & Remaining Work

  • Line marking installation for car parking bays completed
  • Installation of all remaining line marking (stop & give way control lines, piano key markings on raised speed humps, etc.) currently underway
  • Installation of new and replacement signage
  • Intersection priority reversal has occurred at Palmerston Street / Whitfield Street intersection

To imagine what it will look like, see the flyover video(External link). It was produced before the design was finalised but provides an indicative view.
