New CEO welcomed to the Town New CEO, Ms Peta Mabbs, was welcomed to the Town on 22 October 2018. Peta brings a wealth of experience from her 34 years working within the State Government across agencies responsible for justice, policing, child protection, corruption and integrity, land information, housing and communities—all of which have critical links to the community. Peta also has a very personal connection to the Town which attracted her to the role. “My love of the local community comes from a long connection with the area and fond childhood memories,” shared Ms Mabbs. “I spent the first 30 years of my life living in the Town of Bassendean in Ashfield, Success Hill and West Bassendean.” “In my early years I attended the local Bassendean Kindergarten followed by Ashfield Primary School—where my mother taught for many years. My mother worked for most of the remainder of her career at Eden Hill Primary and my father worked in the real estate industry for many years based in Bassendean before retiring,” she said. “I am motivated by the opportunity to work in an environment where there is a real sense of community. Growing up in Bassendean, I enjoyed a special and memorable childhood which I will always cherish. “Being appointed as the CEO of the Town of Bassendean is an honour and will enable me to work with a passionate and enthusiastic Council, committed staff and importantly, genuinely engage with the local community so together we can create a sustainable future that we may share with future generations.” If you see Peta out and about in the community, please make sure you say ‘hello’! The difference between council and the administration in Local Governments Council The council is elected by the community and is the governing body of a local government. It is made up of between six and fifteen elected members and is led by a mayor or president. Councils are responsible for the governance of their local government’s affairs and functions. This includes oversight of the planning and allocation of finances and resources, and the determination of local government policies. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) The CEO is employed by the council to head the administration and manage the day to day operations, or executive functions, of the local government and to implement council policies and decisions. Staff The staff are employed and directed exclusively by the CEO to perform the functions of the local government.
