Town to review Australia Day event

The Town of Bassendean has announced that it will establish a working group to review the future direction of its annual Australia Day Celebrations and Fireworks event.

On an annual basis from 2005, the Town of Bassendean has been staging its own Australia Day event which has grown to become one of the main Australia Day events in the Perth Metropolitan area and a flagship event for the Town.

“We have run the celebrations in this form for 13 years now. Given the undertaking has grown to being a major production and that there was considerable publicity around the decision by the City of Fremantle in relation to their Australia Day celebrations, it is felt that it is an opportune time to review what we do, and how we do it,” said the Town’s Director Community Development, Mr Graeme Haggart.

“The Town is respectful and aware of the sentiment that exists within the Australian Aboriginal and broader community of the sensitivity of celebrating Australia Day on 26 January each year and we just want to make sure that we have the conversation to decide the best direction to take regarding the event.

“The review also gives Council the opportunity to measure the overall effectiveness of the Australia Day celebration event taking into account the current investment by the Town and the risks associated with the increasing complexity of staging the event.

At the end of the day, Council may well decide to retain the event unchanged, but it is certainly appropriate that we do investigate the options in an open and transparent way.

It is also timely in that the review outcome will be factored into the review of the Town’s cultural plan that is currently underway.”

A working group with representation from the Town’s Livable Town Advisory Committee, Aboriginal community members, other community members and staff is currently being established to facilitate the review process that will mostly be achieved in March and April, including the community consultation process.

Community members are invited to nominate to be included as part of the working group. Nominations are now closed. A maximum of three (3) community member positions are being made available.
