Here’s a delicious alternative!
“Gateau de semoule de ma mere”,or, Mum’s Semolina Cake.Yummm! Based on the recipe from “et voila! French pastries from Choux Café” by Emmaneul Mollois, available at the Library, a truly deliciously inspirational book of crèmes, choux, brioches, croissants, meringues, tarts, and gateaus…
Ingredients:
9 tablespoons wheat semolina
1 litre full cream milk
1 pinch cinnamon
2 tablespoons caster sugar
1 1/2 vanilla beans
4 eggs
3 tablespoons sugar
Water
Method:
Preheat oven to 180oC. Combine semolina, milk, cinnamon and caster sugar in a saucepan. Slice the vanilla beans lengthwise and scrape out the seeds into the saucepan. Cook over high heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Remove from heat and add the eggs one by one, mixing well each time. In another saucepan, cook the sugar and water over medium heat until it turns a caramel colour. Pour it into a 22cm diameter cake tin, covering the sides and the bottom. Pour the semolina mixture into the cake tin and cook for 30-40 minutes until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before turning out. Serve warm.
Emmanuel says “This is a basic recipe - you have to make it with your gut feeling; you have to judge if it needs more or less of something.”!

The coming summer looks as if it will be a long dry spell.
Water is a limited and valuable resource and everyone is encouraged to keep consumption under control and to get the best possible return for each litre of water consumed.
The Library has two new opportunities available to help you with the effort of being responsible and water aware this summer.
Shower timers
Keeping our time in the shower to a minimum – whilst getting refreshed and keeping clean- is a very positive way of cutting down on water usage. The Library has 50 shower timers available.
Water Saving Buckets
A great idea for capturing and reusing water that would otherwise be wasted is the water saving bucket.
Many people use a standard plastic bucket to catch water in the shower for reuse .
The Library has available water saving buckets with a twist - literally! Slightly twisted folding plastic buckets that store flat when not in use.
These 11 litre buckets can be used in the shower, in the sink (when washing fruit or vegetables for example) and in other situations that generate opportunities to capture a bit of water that can be put to other uses - like keeping a treasured garden area going in summer.
Here’s the catch
If you would like to get a shower timer - or a folding storage bucket - you have to earn it!. Yep, we want you to write down what benefit you or your family would get if you have one of these items.
Send your entries to the Library at 46 Old Perth Road – or drop them off .
Address your entry to the GREYT OPPORTUNITY c/- Library .
We will be taking entries until midday on Friday
December 24th and contacting successful entrants in January 2011.

There is a secret Easter egg hunt
in the Library
...until 9th April
(Sshh, don’t tell anyone)
The 14th of February was Valentine’s Day and Library Lovers Day.
Some beautiful poems were presented to the Library and graced the Wall of Romantic Poetry.
The Long Wait
The war will not last long, he said
She waited
For his letter to arrive
Wait, I will return, hell does not want me
She waited
Then came a parcel from Provence
Seeds to plant, it said
She watered them with tears
The years dragged on
In window boxes the Red poppies grew
She waited
That spring her hair turned grey
Then, came the knock at the door
Flowers in his hand
She waited no more.
(A. Benz-Sterle. Dedicated to my grandmother.)

The Library wants to collect 500 empty, clean milk cartons. We also want to collect any unwanted bookmarks you have hidden around the home. And would you believe we are asking you to bring to the library any lolly, chocolate and sweets wrappers for our project? And finally, but importantly, we want you to get the kids to cut good news items from the newspapers and drop them into the library.
So, what are we doing? Well, we want to take these recycled items and create four really big billboards from the milk cartons and decorate them with the wrappers, bookmarks and good news items. We are going to hold a series of workshops at the Libraryin September and Octoberto create the boards. When the boards are finished, we are going to display them at the Bassendean Festival in December and showcase our Bassendean talent.
There are collection bins and containers in the Library foyer for the milk cartons, wrappers, bookmarks and news items. Please help us by making sure that the milk cartons and other items are washed clean and dried before you bring them in.
A big thank you to those people who have already responded to our call for recycled milk cartons, sweets wrappers and unwanted book marks. Remember that the Library is going to turn all this into some really great displays for the December Community fair. We still need more of these items to enable the project to be completed. So, drop off washed dry milk cartons, sweets/chocolate wrappers and book marks at the Library.
The other really important and exciting recycling contribution we want from you is the good news (only) headlines or articles you find in stuff you read and would like to see on a board. So keep your eyes open for anything with that good news component, cut it out and drop it in.
Talking of recycling, don't forget that the Library has containers for you to drop of (and recycle) dry cell batteries, unwanted reading and sun glasses, printer, fax, copier cartridges, and unwanted mobile phones.
