Asset Services Information Sheet – Verge Treatments
Introduction
The portion of land between a property boundary and the road is referred to as the verge. Property owners or residents of land abutting the verge may install a permissible verge treatment.
A permissible verge treatment is one that is approved by Council and subject to stringent conditions.
Permissible Verge Treatments
Permissible verge treatments within the Town of Bassendean include:
- The planting and maintenance of a lawn, including the installation of basic reticulation using retractable sprinkler heads.
- The planting and maintenance of a garden providing that:
- Clear sight visibility is maintained at all times for a person using the abutting thoroughfare, in the vicinity of an intersection, or bend in the thoroughfare. Shrubs and groundcovers are to be natives and no more than 600mm in height.
- Where there is no footpath, pedestrians have safe and clear access of a minimum width of two-metres along that part of the verge immediately adjacent to the kerb.
- The installation of no more than one third of the area of the verge, excluding the vehicle crossover, of an acceptable materials including semi-pervious soil stabilisation devices, brick paving, or any materials that are permeable. The balance of the verge is to be planted with either a lawn or garden in accordance with the information provided above.
Obligations of the Owner or Occupier of the Land
An owner or occupier who installs or maintains a permissible verge treatment shall:
- Keep the permissible verge treatment in a good and tidy condition, and where the verge treatment is a garden or lawn, that the footpath (if installed), and carriageway adjoining the verge is not obstructed by the verge treatment.
- Not place any obstruction on or around the verge treatment.
- Not disturb a footpath on the verge.
Applications to Alter an Existing Verge Treatment
Applications to alter an existing verge treatment are to be made in writing to the Town and shall include a plan of the proposed treatment.
