Asset Services Information Sheet – Street Trees

Introduction

The portion of land between a property boundary and the road is referred to as the verge. Trees planted on the verge are street trees. Planting, pruning, and removal of street trees are the responsibility of the Town of Bassendean.

Planting Street Trees

The Town carries out its street tree planting program in July/August each year to coincide with the winter rains. Residents may request a tree be planted on the verge either in writing or by contacting the Town’s Parks and Gardens Supervisor on 9377 9000.

Residents will be given a choice of up to three species of tree based on the predominant species in the existing streetscape. Where there is only one predominant species of tree in the street, the resident will not be provided a choice. Where possible, the use of local native plant species or those with low water demand will be planted.

Street trees will be planted on an alignment measuring 2.7 metres from the property line. Street trees will not be planted when the tree will be:

  • Within 3 metres of a vehicle crossover, or pedestrian ramp.
  • Within 25 metres of a terminating road intersection.
  • Within 9 metres of another street tree.

Pruning Street Trees

Residents are not permitted to prune street trees. Under the direction of the Town’s Parks and Gardens department, the pruning of street trees will only be undertaken to:

  • Provide safe clearance from aerial power lines.
  • Ensure appropriate line of sight at intersections and crossovers.
  • Reduce undue safety or amenity impact on an adjoining property.
  • Maintain appropriate clearance from footpaths or dual-use paths.

Removal of Street Trees

The Town of Bassendean will not permit the removal of any street tree unless it is considered dangerous, diseased or dead, a traffic hazard, obstructing vehicles or pedestrians, causing damage to public or private property and/or is an extraordinary maintenance problem associated with power lines.
