Noise - Musical Instruments

The Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997 permit the playing of a single musical instrument in residential areas, provided the following requirements are complied with:

1.  The musical instrument is used in a reasonable manner.

  • This includes playing the instrument in a suitable room with all the windows and doors closed, and playing at the lowest volume possible.

  • A metal shed does not constitute a suitable room, as there is insufficient attenuation of the noise.

  • In the case of drum kits, sound off pads and cymbal silencers are recommended.

  • Electric guitars should have the amplifier turned down to lowest level.
  • Band practice should be carried out in approved studios and not in residential areas.

2.  The instrument is played for no more than one hour per day.

  • between 0700 hours and 1900 hours on Monday to Saturday inclusive or
  • between 0900 hours and 1900 hours on a Sunday or Public Holiday

3.  The resulting noise emissions do not unreasonably interfere with the comfort or amenity of the neighbours.

Should you wish to discuss a noise concern you may have, please contact the Town's Authorised Noise Officer on 9377 8000.
