Noise - Musical Instruments

The Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997 permit the playing of a single musical instrument in residential areas, provided the following requirements are complied with:

1. The musical instrument is used in a reasonable manner.

This includes playing the instrument in a suitable room with all the windows and doors closed, and playing at the lowest volume possible.
A metal shed does not constitute a suitable room, as there is insufficient attenuation of the noise.
In the case of drum kits, sound off pads and cymbal silencers are recommended.
Electric guitars should have the amplifier turned down to lowest level.

Band practice should be carried out in approved studios and not in residential areas.

2. The instrument is played for no more than one hour per day.

between 0700 hours and 1900 hours on Monday to Saturday inclusive or
between 0900 hours and 1900 hours on a Sunday or Public Holiday

3. The resulting noise emissions do not unreasonably interfere with the comfort or amenity of the neighbours.
