Ranger Services Information Sheet 11
Fire prevention
Fire prevention and fire season requirements
Land owners/occupiers are legally required to clear their properties of combustible materials by 31 October each year in the Town of Bassendean.
Annual inspections
The rangers do annual inspections of properties after the deadline of 31 October each year to ensure they are cleared of combustible material from the whole of the land. The combustible material is to be slashed or mowed to ensure that it is no higher than 10cm in height until the 31 March of the following year.
Living trees, shrubs, plants under cultivation and maintained lawns are excluded from the clearing requirements.
Clearing is necessary to:
- Help prevent the spread of fire
- Allow easy access for emergency vehicles
- Reduce the risk of fire
Penalty
The penalty for failing to comply with the Bushfires Act is a modified penalty of $250 or a fine of up to $5000 by the court.
Please note that the Town of Bassendean Local Laws prohibits the burning of foliage or bush without the Town's prior consent. If you wish to burn because you can not remove the material by any other means you can call the rangers on 9377 7480 for an evaluation of your land.
