Ashfield playground

New playground opens in Ashfield

Mayor cuts ribbonA new playground was officially opened in Ashfield by Mayor John Gangell on Monday 1 May.

The Playground, which is on the Ashfield Reserve between the Ashfield Community Centre and the Ashfield Sports Club, is the first of the district playgrounds to be constructed as part of the Town’s Playspaces Implementation Plan. The Plan’s aim is to rationalise and revitalise the Town’s playspaces over the next ten years.

The playground design was finalised after consultation with the local community, and the Town’s Disability Access and Inclusion and Children’s Services Committees.

As such, the playground incorporates a range of play elements for all ages and abilities, and is the benchmark for future district playground development in the Town.

Local residents and children from the Wind in the Willows Child Care Centre, amongst others, enjoyed free entertainment and a sausage sizzle provided by the Ashfield Community Action Network before assisting the Mayor in cutting the ribbon to open the playground.

In this edition of the Bassendean Briefings you will find full details on the free Community Safety Forum that Council is running on Saturday 11 June in the Bassendean Community Hall from 12 – 2 pm.

I would encourage all residents to come along and ask questions and seek feedback from the Office of Crime Prevention and the WA Police about how we can all contribute to providing a safer community.

Council is also working towards the undergrounding of power in Ashfield, commencing in January 2012, and you can find out full details of this program inside the Briefings.

There is also information on how you can be involved in the Annual Bassendean Visual Art Awards, due to be held in September and October this year.

NAIDOC Day is on Thursday 7 July and the Town will celebrate this day at the Ashfield Reserve from 10 am to 3 pm. Please come along and be a part of the celebrations.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Bassendean Briefings, and I look forward to seeing you at all the events and community activities that are advertised in this edition of the Briefings.

Kind regards,
Cr John Gangell
