Council shows lead in local government reform

In a 6/3 decision at the Council meeting held on 8 March, Councillors voted for a complete spill at the Local Government elections to be held in October 2011.

While subject to approval by the Local Government Advisory Board, the Minister for Local Government and the Governor, this means that only six Councillors will be elected in October—thereby reducing the number of Councillors in the Town by three.

The landmark decision also includes doing away with the wards structure currently in use in the Town. Candidates for election will now need to campaign throughout the entire Town, as each new Councillor will need to be voted in by all electors in the Town.

Council had previously indicated to the Minister for Local Government that it would consider these changes as part of its response to the Minister’s call for reform in Local Government. As soon as the Minister makes a decision on the Council’s proposal, the community will be informed via the local newspaper and a future edition of the Bassendean Briefings.

This year has been a very productive year for Council and we are only halfway through it— and this edition of the Briefings is no exception.

In this edition of the Briefings there is an overview of the Council decision on the Ward and Boundary review where Council has resolved to reduce from 9 Councillors to 6 Councillors, to abolish the wards to become one district, and to declare all Councillor positions vacant at the upcoming elections in October.

There are also updates on the Civic Precinct Plan, the Broadway Arboretum Concept Plan, the Jubilee Path Network, and the Bassendean Tennis Courts.

The annual green waste collection is on again and you can find out when your street collection will commence. You can also find information on the Bassendean Memorial Library’s annual Foolish April book sale inside.

As this year is the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers, we focus on the wonderful job our volunteers do in the Town and let you know how you can be involved.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Bassendean Briefings and I look forward to seeing you at all the events and community activities that are advertised in this edition.

Kind regards,
Cr John Gangell
Mayor
