Bassendean embraces Markets
The sun was shining and the stallholders were all decked out and ready in time for the huge crowds that came from near and far.
In the weeks prior to Sunday 29 August, the Town placed banners near Bassendean Oval and posters on the roadside and in cafes in Maylands, Bayswater, Inglewood and Mt Lawley. Flyers were distributed to all households in Bassendean and at Bassendean Oval, the Visitor Centre in Guildford and at shops in Midland and the Swan Valley. The day before, the Town had already carried out special street cleaning for the precinct and extra bins were delivered. From 6.00am the Rotary Club team of nine members were on site. After a meeting in the early dawn, they dispersed in all directions with clear instructions and responsibilities.
The day ran with military precision. Traffic management quickly sealed off the roads and then from 7.00 am the stallholders arrived—all 77 of them! At 8.30 am the first customers started to arrive even though the market wasn’t officially open until 9.00 am! And they didn’t stop coming right through until 2.30 pm which came so quickly.
The anticipation about the markets was strong, so the Town had a lot riding on this market day being a success, and we feel confident that it lived up to everyone’s expectations! It’s the culmination of much background work that involved all areas of the Council rowing together. Having the Library open on the day was particularly well received and the ease of parking and access to ATMs made the whole experience so much more enjoyable.
The next market day is Sunday 26 September and the majority of stallholders have signed up for this day. The Rotary Club will work closely with the Town to maintain the standard now set. New entertainment and new stallholders will feature at forthcoming market days.

from the mayor
Thank you to everybody who made the inaugural Old Perth Road Markets held on August 29, a phenomenal success.
The day had a very festive show-type atmosphere with 77 stalls and over 6,000 people attending and it was wonderful to see so many residents from our Town enjoying themselves.
Most pleasing is the benefit to our businesses on Old Perth Road and one business owner provided the following feedback:
“We would like to express our appreciation for the inception, and delivery of the Market day. The event exposed our business to many possible clients; from which we have seen a significant increase in daily sales post the Markets. Please convey our thanks to the organisers.”
Once again thank you for making the Old Perth Road Markets such a tremendous success and I look forward to seeing you there on the last Sunday of the month.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Bassendean Briefings.
Kind regards,
Cr John Gangell
Mayor

Former Masonic Hall site sells
The Town of Bassendean has resolved to sell the former Masonic Hall site in Wilson Street for just in excess of $1 million dollars to Capital Property Services (WA) Pty Ltd, which is keen to redevelop the site.
The Masonic Hall is on the State Register of Heritage Places and any redevelopment of the site will be required to retain and incorporate the building. The Local Planning Scheme envisages the site being developed with up 16 dwellings, including conversion of the existing hall. Any development proposals will require consultation with the Heritage Council of WA.
Mayor Gangell said, “I am excited by the prospect of seeing the redevelopment of this heritage building and look forward to the positive effects of providing more housing in close proximity to the Town Centre.”
