Bassendean hearts continue to beat with Heart Foundation walking
The Heart Foundation and the Town of Bassendean are proud to announce their commitment to providing free community-based walking groups—a fun, free way to become more physically active, enjoy the outdoors and meet new people.
The long-standing Bassendean Walking Group held a launch and morning tea early in August registering more than 50 walkers with the program. The group has been walking for well over a decade but is pleased to have added support from the Town and the Heart Foundation to ensure it attracts new members and is sustainable in the future.
The Bassendean Walking Group walks on Mondays at 9.00am at various locations within the Town of Bassendean, including Point Reserve, Sandy Beach Reserve and Success Hill Reserve. The 30 to 45 minute walk in the local area is designed for low-medium fitness levels, with walkers given the option to turn back at any time.
The Heart Foundation recommends people should aim to include at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most, preferably all, of the days of the week. Heart Foundation Walking and the Town of Bassendean are inviting community members to establish small groups of walkers in their local area.

Road resurfacing coming up
The following roads will be resurfaced as part of the Town of Bassendean’s road resurfacing program:
| Street name | Scope of works | Date of works |
|---|---|---|
| Jackson Street | From Railway Parade to Collier Road | 26–27 September 2010 |
| Bridson Street | From Kenny Street to West Road | 29–30 September 2010 |
| Walter Road | East From 111 Walter Road East to Wicks Street | 30 September to 6 October 2010 |
| Hardy Road | From Pearson Street to Fisher Street | 4–5 October 2010 |
These proposed dates for the works are subject to favourable weather conditions.
During construction there will be partial road closures and some need for detours. While every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience, due to the size and movement of road plant, motorists should expect delays during the works and may like to consider alternative routes to reduce any inconvenience.
Kerb parking will not be available during the works. Direct vehicle access to properties will be restricted when spray bitumen is being applied to the road surface and for short periods when road plant is working directly in front of the property.
The works will be carried out by the Town’s Contractor, Downer EDI.
Any queries relating to the works should be directed to the Town’s Engineering Works Supervisor, Mr Cris Mann, on 041 991 4930.
Business Bulletin
The Town has been active in its support for its business community, including:
Update on Late Night Shopping
Legislation allowing the partial deregulation of WA’s retail trading laws has passed through the Lower House of State Parliament. The proposed laws would extend trading hours to 9:00pm on weeknights across the metropolitan area, including Bassendean, and allow shops that sell white goods to open on Sundays. The potential effect on Bassendean is that busy parents wanting to catch-up on shopping on Sunday will take their business to other suburbs.
Although the Premier has made assurances that the shopping hours confusion will be cleared up before Christmas, Council will continue to pursue the matter with the State Government to either repeal the anachronistic Retail Act or scale back the stringent rules that control retail trading hours.
To landfill or not to landfill—this is the question
Sending anything to landfill these days is getting pretty expensive and indications are the cost is going to rise rapidly over the next couple of years. That is why the Waste Management Association of Australia recently launched the new online directory ‘Commercial and Industrial Recycling Guide’ for small business. The directory provides a web-based resource allowing those in the Perth area who want to recycle but aren’t sure where to take the material—or even if their waste can be recycled— with up-to-date information.
A quick examination of the directory reveals that just in the Midland, Bayswater, Bassendean triangle, auto parts, e-waste, metals, paper, cardboard, glass, timber, organic, plastic, furniture and construction and demolition waste can be recycled.

Get on line: Make your business web smart
Particularly aimed at new businesses, this program is designed to give small businesses essential e-business tools that will help them with business strategies and to take advantage of global opportunities. The Economic Development Survey carried out by the Town in December 2009 indicated that over ninety per cent of businesses have internet access, but are not taking full advantage of the internet to build opportunities.
This free program will be held on 5.30pm on Monday 8 November at Bassendean Memorial Library. To learn more about this go to the Town of Bassendean’s website and download the registration form or go direct to www.letsgo.org.au.
DVD still available
The Town recently produced a DVD of the Vince Garreffa presentation at a ‘Bassendean Means Business’ breakfast. The subject for the breakfast was ‘Getting to the heart of town centre vitality’. If you are interested in raising the profile of your business then don’t miss out on owning this DVD. Only a limited number of DVDs were made. Contact the EDO, William Barry, by email at wbarry@bassendean.wa.gov.au to secure your copy.
Bassendean goes to Mukinbudin
In July, the Town’s Economic Development Officer (EDO) embarked on a pilot program to assist regional and remote communities in addressing economic challenges sustaining their region. This was part of Economic Development Australia (EDA) of which the Town has been a member for the last two years. EDA is at the forefront of driving economic development at a community level.
Regional WA is poorly represented on the EDA and rural areas often have the biggest challenges facing their economic future. The Town’s EDO joined other local government volunteers to offer a wide range of experience and backgrounds and the local community embraced the weekend project with genuine enthusiasm. The Mukinbudin community were particularly interested in the new markets that the Town has developed and see them as a tangible example of local retailers and community getting together to promote and celebrate the Town.
Economic development is essentially bringing ideas and people together and encouraging people to have a go. This program will be launched at the National Economic Development Conference in Sydney in October.
