Town achieves significant milestones
Certificate of Achievement for Water Campaign
The Town of Bassendean has been progressively working through the milestones of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives’ (ICLEI) Water Campaign that focuses on water conservation and water quality at both a corporate and community level.
On Wednesday 5 August 2010, Mayor John Gangell received, on behalf of the Town of Bassendean, a Certificate of Achievement for demonstrating leadership and a commitment towards integrated freshwater resource management.
The Town of Bassendean achieved Milestone 4 in the Corporate module of the Water Campaign by implementing policies and measures to integrate water resource management and quantifying the benefits that result. The Certificate of Achievement was subsequently provided to staff in appreciation for the dedication and work that had been undertaken.

Biodiversity Milestone Award
The Town of Bassendean has been progressively working through the Western Australian Local Government Association’s and the Western Australian Government’s Natural Resource Management Perth Biodiversity Project milestones.
The Perth Biodiversity Project is a local government initiative subscribed to by 32 Perth Metropolitan Region local governments. On Friday 7 August 2010, Deputy Mayor Councillor Gerry Pule received, on behalf of the Town of Bassendean, a Perth Biodiversity Milestone Award for preparing a Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. This Plan provides the Town with a framework to use its functions and powers to effectively protect and manage natural areas.
The Town of Bassendean is one of the leading Councils operating within the Perth Biodiversity support structure and, to date, has achieved two of the seven Milestones and been successful in winning three of the eight associated awards. Congratulations are extended to all involved.
Weather didn’t dampen celebrations!
Despite light rain, the NAIDOC Family Day event held in July with partners Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service was a great day.
The Reconciliation Walk started the day and was followed by a moving Welcome to Country by Aboriginal Elder, Ben Taylor, and the signing by the Mayor of Bassendean, Cr John Gangell, of the Town’s commitment to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan.
The entertainment included outstanding performances by the Bartlett Brothers, Old Flames and a surprise performance by Mary G, the ‘Queen of the Kimberley’, who chose Bassendean to make her only public appearance.
Thanks to the fifteen Cyril Jackson Senior Campus students who turned up to assist with setting-up and packing-down of the event and to the Ashfield Primary School P&C, who provided the 3000-strong crowd with a delicious sausage sizzle and salad.
Photography Exhibition
Bassendean resident and photographer, April Ward, will be having an exhibition of her work entitled ‘Public Places, Private Lives’. It will be on display in the Bassendean Memorial Library from Monday 4 October to Friday 15 October.
“This series of work is a study of the society I see on a daily basis; of people living their private lives in public spaces; their acceptance of having their privacy so unwittingly on display,” said April.
This is part of an exhibition April recently staged as a participant of the FOTO FREO FRINGE Festival 2010.

history matters
Our page in history
The Bassendean Library has a free use ‘Our Page In History’ booth located in the Library foyer. The booth enables you to go online and create a personal page and store your stories, histories and digital photos.
The information you decided to include can be kept private or made available to a wider audience—you decide.
You don’t need to be a computer genius to access and use the booth—it is all set up for you. The long-term aim of this project is to get people’s stories, family history photos etc as part of the state’s record.
To give people a chance to look at the website and the project, the Library will be holding an open session—with nibbles and drinks—on Monday evening 18 October commencing at 7.00pm. We will have Bronwyn and Melissa from The State Library Foundation as our presenters and guides to the ‘Our Page in History’ site. You do need to book for catering purposes, so just ring the Library on 9279 2966.
If you can’t wait until October, simply drop into the Library and check out the booth with a staff member as your guide.
