Heinrich Benz was sworn into Council on Tuesday 29th June for a term that lapses at the date of the Local Government elections in October 2011.
Cr Benz and his family are actively involved in the community having lived in Bassendean for over 16 years. Here, Cr Benz offers a glimpse into his background.
“My three young children attend Bassendean Primary School and my wife teaches yoga in the Town. I have a Bachelor of Communications and qualified for a PhD dealing with population health. Before I started to study I worked in the IT field for over 20 years.
I now work for the Bicycle Transportation Alliance aiming to create safer roads for people who choose to walk, use public transport or a bicycle for their commuting or shopping.
I intend to work towards a safe, friendly and community-oriented township with vulnerable road users in mind, and I would like the town’s assets and rate payer funds used in an efficient way for the benefit of all residents.”

from the mayor
It is with great excitement that I announce the future phase to revitalise the town centre to create an urban inner city hub will commence on August 29, 2010 with the launching of the Old Perth Road Markets.
Continuing with the revitalisation theme the town is also looking at selling two vital pieces of land the Masonic Hall Site and the former Squash Courts site to encourage inner city growth within the town centre.
With the expected growth the town is also committed to the implementation of the Playspaces plan and the first stage will commence at Ashfield Reserve.
Along with visually appealing playspaces in Ashfield the town will also be holding the 2010 Bassendean Visual Art Awards in September at the Cyril Jackson Recreation Centre Hall.
If you are looking for a venue to hold your next function or birthday celebrations you can find out inside how to hire the Cyril Jackson Recreation Centre Hall.
Further information on all of the above items can be found in this edition of the Bassendean Briefings. Enjoy your reading.

The 2010/2011 Budget has also seen the Town of Bassendean, with the assistance of the EMRC, develop a number of projects designed to enhance the environment. These include Bushland Management, Cities for Climate Protection, Solar Cities Program, Collective Biodiversity, Drainage Monitoring and Signage, Water Campaign, Green fleet and Education, Future Proofing, and Weed Control.
A significant portion has also been set aside for Public Events being held throughout the Town. Events on the horizon include Australia Day, NAIDOC Week, Anzac Day, Seniors Week, Summer Outdoor Movies, Visual Arts Awards, Avon Descent and the Multicultural Festival. Council is also looking to host a free Summer Movies program during February.
Slow down in Bassendean
The three major causes of trauma, including death, on our roads are impaired driving (alcohol and drugs), not wearing seatbelts, and speed.
Whilst the Town can do little to address issues relating to impaired driving and not wearing seatbelts, we can and do address issues relating to speeding. We recently entered into a partnership with the WA Police Traffic Division whereby we provide them with all traffic data collected using our traffic classifiers. They assess the data provided and are able to target those areas where speeding is an issue.
Following one such instance in recent times, the WA Police targeted one of our local streets and issued 35 infringements and 10 warnings in relation to traffic issues. The Town will continue to work with Traffic Police to slow down traffic in the streets of Bassendean and we encourage the community to get on board by slowing down.
