Election to be held in the North Ward
Residents in the North Ward will be issued postal ballot papers by the WA Electoral Commission in an Extraordinary Election to be held on Thursday 17 June 2010 resulting from the untimely death of Cr Piantadosi.
The casual vacancy will be to complete the term of office held by Cr Piantadosi that lapses at the date of the Local Government elections in October 2011.
“Ballot papers will be delivered by Australia Post during the week commencing on Monday 24 May,” said Cr John Gangell, Mayor of the Town of Bassendean.
“Just place a tick in the box on the ballot paper against the candidate of your choice. Do not make any other marks on the ballot paper. Remember to vote and make your vote count,” Mayor Gangell emphasised.
Included with the ballot papers will be a return prepaid envelope. Place your vote in the envelope provided and either post it (free of charge) to the WA Electoral Commission or place it in the ballot box conveniently located at the Town’s Customer Service Centre at 35 Old Perth Road, Bassendean. Remember to sign the elector’s certificate where indicated to avoid your vote being invalid (and not counted).
“Residents have up until 6.00 pm on Thursday 17 June to lodge their vote,” added Mayor Gangell.
Please note that the Customer Service Centre will be open up until 6.00pm on Thursday 17 June to accept ballot papers. For all other working days prior to the 17 June, the Customer Service Centre will be open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm. Electors opting to place their vote in the ballot box must do just that. The overnight chute is expressly not to be used.
The count will be conducted in the Committee Room at 48 Old Perth Road, Bassendean, at 6.00 pm on Thursday 17 June and the successful candidate will be determined by a first-past-the-post count.
The successful candidate will be sworn into office at an Ordinary Council meeting to be held on Tuesday 22 June at 7.00 pm and will serve out the remainder of the term of office as a North Ward Councillor, lapsing at the date of the Local Government elections in October 2011.
Electors seeking to replace their ballot papers are required to present in person at the Customer Service Centre, 35 Old Perth Road, during working hours. (Please note that the replacement process takes a little time and the vote must be in the box at the close of polling at 6.00 pm.)
The nominees’ profiles are published on notice boards outside the Customer Service Centre and inside the Bassendean Memorial Library (46 Old Perth Road, Bassendean). The profiles are also available on the Town’s website.
from the mayor
This issue of the Bassendean Briefings focuses on many upcoming projects that will be commenced throughout the Town in the coming weeks.
Ashfield has been chosen to take part in a unique trial project as part of the Perth Solar Cities program. As part of Solar Cities, Ashfield Reserve will be lit up with eight solar lighting poles. This will allow residents to use the Reserve at night and will add greatly to the security of the area.
Our other reserves in the Town have been equipped with new barbeque facilities. So next time you are planning to have a barbeque with family and friends be sure to utilise the wonderful new facilities provided at the Town’s reserves.
Keeping with the theme of reserves, the Town is about to commence the Public Toilet Improvement Program. Brand new toilet facilities will be constructed at the Town’s reserves and the first reserve to benefit from this program will be Point Reserve.
Also in this edition of the Bassendean Briefings, the extremely popular Plants to Residents Scheme returns; the final stage of the BIC Tennis Courts gets started; and planning is underway for the 2010 Bassendean Visual Art Awards.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Bassendean Briefings.
Kind regards,
Cr John Gangell
Mayor
Ashfield Reserve lighting
– Perth Solar Cities
The Town of Bassendean and the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council are proud to be part of the Australian Government’s Solar Cities program—a unique trial project aimed at changing the way we think about and use energy.
In January 2010, Council approved a ‘Memorandum of Understanding to Implement Perth Solar City Demonstration Projects’. As part of the Solar Cities project the Town of Bassendean is planning to install 8 x 6 m lighting poles at Ashfield Reserve and the power will be offset by a 3.6 kW photovoltaics (PVs) system that feeds electricity into the energy grid. The lighting is expected to be operational at Ashfield Reserve by July 2010.
Solar Cities is a program that you too can be involved in. To find out more please call 1300 993 268 or visit www.perthsolarcity.com.au
