Bassendean treasure!
The Local Studies Collection has put one of its real treasures on display.
In 1906, residents of West Guildford (now Bassendean) signed a petition to the Commissioner of Railways which requested “to respectfully beg to urge upon you the necessity of provision being made for better railway facilities in our midst”. The Petition has more information contained on it—along with signatures from the residents.
This original Petition has been made available by the Australian Railway Historical Society and the Local Studies Collection and is on display in the Library ‘under glass’. This truly significant piece of Bassendean memorabilia will be on display until Friday 19 February—so don’t miss out. Just drop into the Library, amble down to the display cabinet and check out the Petition. See signatures for names you will recognise—Padbury, Hyland, Smith and Bull… Do yourself a favour and see a genuine treasure!
Exciting new Library services in 2010
TOP4
TOP4 is a web-based facility that offers any Library member with Internet access the opportunity to be kept informed of new items being added to the Library stock.
You are able to indicate four subject areas of interest using your Internet-based membership. If the Library gets any material that is directly related to your chosen interests, a notice will be sent to you. Then you have the choice of requesting or reserving or ignoring the new item.
You are also able to change your subjects of interest on a regular basis. You aren’t obliged to stay with the first four choices—you have control at all times of the areas of interest. You don’t even have to use four choices: one, two or three subjects might be all you need. It is emphasised that this service is only available through your web-based membership screen. So if you don’t have Internet access then you won’t have access to the TOP4 facility.
SMS
The Library will be implementing an SMS advice facility in the near future. This will enable anyone who wishes to be notified of the arrival of their reservations and requested items by phone.
This will be an ‘opt in’ service only—that is, you let the Library know that you wish to receive notification via SMS and provide the preferred mobile number, and we will activate that number as your preferred method of communication. The Library is still able to send out written notices or email—the SMS is merely another option available. Please remember to notify the Library if you wish to be included in the forthcoming ‘advice by SMS’. You can do this by contacting the Library in person, by email at basslib@bassendean.wa.gov.au or by phone on 9279 2966.
Junior Artists Workshops
The Library, in conjunction with the Bassendean Arts Community, is offering three separate Saturday morning workshops for young members of the community.
These workshops will be conducted by local artist Kirsty Grieve. The workshops will be held in Meeting Room 2 at the Library. Each workshop will be about an hour long and starts at 10.00 am. There is a limit of 10 children per workshop and there is a $10 fee per participant to cover material and other costs. Bookings need to be made—along with payment. This can be done in person at the Library.
Saturday March 6 – Workshop 1: for children aged 6–7 (Year 2)
Creating Stamps: This workshop will explore differing methods of mark making. Potatoes and sponges form the basis for a myriad of shapes and textures, whilst natural dyes such as beetroot and tea are also explored. The imagination is actively used in this workshop.
Saturday March 13 – Workshop 2: for children aged 8–10 (Years 3–5)
Collage: This workshop will use pictures, string, shells, rocks, material, paint and varnish to decorate and create marvellous three dimensional objects. Due to the intensive nature of this session, it will go for an hour and a half.
Saturday March 20 – Workshop 3: for children aged 11–12 (Years 6–7)
Pop-ups: The artist will show the participants how to create simple pop-ups. Simple designs and magazine cut-outs come together to provide interesting, self-imagined pop-up art. Participants are encouraged to bring any images they would like to incorporate into their pop-up creations.
Saturday morning storytelling sessions coming to the Library
There has been interest expressed about the Library holding storytelling sessions on a Saturday morning. To gauge the amount of support for such a service on a Saturday, the Library will be holding storytelling sessions for preschoolers commencing on February 13 at 10.30 am.
This is a great opportunity for dads to be part of the storytelling experience. Come on down to the Library on Saturday mornings for a 10.30am start.
