Town program recognised
The Town of Bassendean has been acknowledged at the recent Disabilities Services Commission’s ‘Count Us In’ Awards presentation for its development of an inclusive physical activity program ‘Active Abilities’. These state-wide awards recognise programs and services within the community for providing opportunities for people with disabilities.
The Town was successful in winning two awards:
- The Local Government Award—presented to a Local Government agency which has developed or strengthened access and inclusion projects to ensure people with disabilities and their families have the same rights and opportunities as the rest of the community; and
- The Dr Louisa Alessandri Award for Excellence—presented to the most outstanding winner from the six ‘Count Us In’ Award categories.
Active Abilities aims to provide intellectually disabled members of the community with the opportunity to participate in a range of physical activities designed to cater for their needs. The participants are given the opportunity to be exposed to various sports, gym and recreation activities allowing them to develop their skills in a range of sports and games.
The program is a joint initiative between the Town of Bassendean, Disabilities Services Commission, WA Disabled Sports Association and the Cyril Jackson Senior Campus.

Fiona Wildy, sister of the late Dr Louisa Alessandri, presents Mayor John Gangell and Chief Executive Officer, Bob Jarvis, with the Award.

Community art workshops
Joyce Tasma, Fibre Artist and Basket Maker, has received grant funding from the Community Arts Network to undertake a community arts project that promotes inclusion and is an expression of local culture and identity.
The Town will be supporting this project and encourages everyone to get involved. The project will involve a series of workshops held at various locations throughout the Town.
Participants are taught simple skills which are then applied to individual pieces. No experience is necessary and Joyce brings with her a great array of interesting materials. The final result will be one amazing piece of art that represents the cultural expression of many people of Bassendean.
Don’t miss the opportunity to be involved and let your creative juices flow!
