Nominations sought for Council’s Committees
Are you interested in joining a committee? Council is seeking community members for the following committees, whose terms will commence following the upcoming Council elections on 17 October 2009 and appointments will be for a two-year term.
If you wish to nominate, or require further information, please contact Council’s Support Officer, Yvonne Zaffino, on 9377 8025 or email yzaffino@bassendean.wa.gov.au and a nomination form will be forwarded to you. Nominations forms are also available on the Town’s website www.bassendean.wa.gov.au.
Nominations close on 1 October 2009.
Council will make appointments to its committees from the nominations received.
Access & Inclusion Committee
This Committee advises Council on issues relating to people with disabilities including the improvement of access to Council services, programs and facilities, and monitors the implementation of the Town’s Disability Services Plan. The Committee meets quarterly at 10.00 am on a Wednesday.
Audit & Risk Management Committee
This Committee assists Council in carrying out its audit functions under the Local Government Act and advises Council on significant risk management issues related to the Town. The Committee meets quarterly at 12.30 pm on a Wednesday.
Children & Family Services Committee
This Committee advises Council on current trends and issues relating to services for children and their families and recommend associated strategies, policies and programs to meet the needs of current and future residents and visitors to the Town of Bassendean. The Committee has an agreed work program that includes progressing establishing an integrated service delivery facility for a range of services for children and families. The Committee meets quarterly at 7.00 pm on a Wednesday.
Cultural Development Committee
This Committee’s role is to support the facilitation of cultural development in the Town, including public events, visual arts, performing arts and literary arts, and to develop a forward plan for the provision of cultural development in the Town. The Committee meets quarterly at 6.00 pm on a Wednesday.
Cyril Jackson Physical Education & Community Recreation Centre Committee
This Committee is responsible for the day-to-day management of community access to the Cyril Jackson Physical Education & Community Recreation Centre. The Committee meets quarterly at 8.30 am on a Thursday.
Economic Development Advisory Committee
This Committee facilitates communication between the Town and the Bassendean business community by engaging them on matters of importance to all stakeholders, such as issues impacting upon the business community, and provides solutions and advice on strategies to foster economic development in the Town. The Committee meets quarterly at 5.30pm on a Wednesday.
Local Studies Collection Management Committee
This Committee manages the Collection for and on behalf of the Council and is responsible for the operation and policy of the Collection. The Committee meets bi-monthly at 9.00 am on a Thursday.
Seniors’ Week Coordinating Committee
This Committee plans, coordinates, advertises and undertakes a comprehensive program of events to celebrate Seniors’ Week. The Committee meets quarterly at 12.30 pm on a Thursday.
Youth Advisory Council
This Committee provides feedback to Council and other levels of Government on topics and issues relevant to young people in the Town. It also provides a capacity building role through development and implementation of events for young people. The group meets monthly at 5.30 pm on a Tuesday, except during school holidays.
Register and win with the Active Family Challenge
The Active Family Challenge encourages families, sporting groups, work and community groups to participate in regular activity and to be rewarded for doing it. Adults need at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most—if not all—days of the week and children need at least 60 minutes of activity every day.
Register for a fun and free spring physical activity challenge and be in the running to win hundreds of prizes! Groups can register online at www.activefamilychallenge.com.au will be in the running to win hundreds of prizes including a family walking break holiday on the Bibbulmun Track, camping equipment from Mountain Designs and backpacks. One sporting or active recreation group can also win $1000 to support their club, courtesy of the Department of Sport and Recreation.
The Challenge is open to any group, and is based on participants registering teams online, monitoring their activity and motivating team members to be active during spring. Participants complete monthly activity log forms for September, October and November to be in the running to win prizes. All the information can be found on the website at www.activefamilychallenge.com.au which also outlines many of the promotions and activities that occur throughout the state.
The event is funded by Lotterywest, and is supported by the Physical Activity Taskforce, Department of Sport and Recreation, Mountain Designs and Bibbulmun Track Foundation.

‘4 All Sports Holiday Program’ happening this October School Holidays
The Town of Bassendean was recently successful in obtaining funding for a sports holiday program, presented on behalf of the Bassendean Cultural Advancement Group, one of whose key objectives is to develop engaging youth activities.
The holiday program will be run in partnership with the Nyoongar Sports Association and involves the following sports: soccer, basketball, rugby league and netball. The program will be held for 2 days each week of the school holidays: Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th October then Thursday 8th and Friday 9th October.
