Eden Hill Primary School’s Principal retires
The Principal of the Eden Hill Primary School, Mr John Alford, retired on 19 July 2009 after 20 years of service at the School. Over 200 people helped celebrate this amazing achievement recently when they gathered at the School to say ‘goodbye’.
John began his teaching career in 1969 at Castle Town in Esperance and went on to teach at the Camballin Special Aboriginal School in 1978, at Latham and on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. In 1986 he headed back to the mainland to teach at the Onslow Special Aboriginal School and then in 1989 he took over as Headmaster of the Eden Hill Primary School.
During John’s 20 year reign, he instigated a number of ‘firsts’ at the school. He established a rock band and a special dance team. He made sure his hard-working P&C members were acknowledged by nominating them for Australia Day Awards, Policeman of the Year Awards, and Volunteer of the Year Awards to ensure that their contribution to the community did not go unnoticed.
John has received 5 nominations for Principal of the Year and was a finalist in 2004.
His legacy at the Eden Hill Primary School will be the strong school ethos and spirit that exists today and the countless children who leave the school well equipped to face the future having benefited from his dedication and professional approach to teaching.

Attention all truck drivers
Are you an owner-operator of a commercial vehicle in the Town of Bassendean and park that vehicle on your property?
The new Local Planning Scheme limits the parking of commercial vehicles in residential areas to one truck only, with a maximum combined tare weight of three tonnes, without the planning approval of Council.
Council is, however, able to consider the parking of commercial vehicles in excess of the 3 tonne limit, subject to a planning application and the vehicle being less than 9 metres in length and a height of 3 metres.
Regardless of size, refrigerated trucks are not permitted and mechanical repairs are not permitted on any vehicles, even those which can legally park in the Town.
The Council has decided to have a 6 month moratorium, ending in November 2009, on enforcement action for all trucks that exceed the 3 tonne combined tare limit. This will provide owners with sufficient time to either re-locate or make an application for Council’s approval.
Infringement notices will continue to be issued by the Town’s Rangers for illegally parked trucks under the Parking Local Laws.
If you have any questions please call the Town’s Senior Planning Officer on 9377 8022.

In April 2009, the Bassendean Town Council resolved to provide ‘in principle’ support for the establishment of an ongoing/regular weekend market in Old Perth Road, Bassendean. Registrations of interest are now being called from the local community and retailers to assist with the facilitation of three key functions required to make the markets proposal a reality:
- Registrations from local community groups or sporting clubs to provide logistical support for the markets;
- Registrations from local retailers who are keen to participate in the markets by providing food, drink, goods and other market stalls; and
- Registrations from the community to sit on a Markets Committee that will provide advice to Council on the facilitation of the markets.
Registrations of interest should be made in writing by Friday 28 August 2009.
