Annual Library History Lecture
The Bassendean Memorial Library is pleased to present its second Annual Library History lecture.
The speaker this year is author and researcher, Rod Dickson, who will be sharing his knowledge of the maritime history of the Swan River. Rod has written and published 4 books and has contributed to the State’s maritime knowledge through a series of reports and a long-standing personal commitment to the preservation of our maritime heritage. He speaks with enthusiasm and an extensive knowledge on his subjects and will include Bassendean’s connections (in the early years) to the river and boat building.
The date for the lecture is Wednesday 24 June 2009. Come along for an 8.00 pm start in the Library meeting room. Seating is limited to 45 people and therefore bookings are essential. Ring the Library on 9279 2966 to reserve your seat. The evening is free and there will be drinks and nibbles provided.
See you at the second Annual Library History Lecture!
Town sponsors bike ride for charity
Sandy Beach Reserve in Bassendean was the starting point recently for a group of 120 bicycle riders from Life Cycle for CanTeen as they set out to ride to Busselton to raise funds for young people living with cancer. The riders left early on Saturday 7th March and they rode approximately 100km each day before arriving in Busselton in the afternoon on Monday 9th March.
Event Coordinator Jenny Aramini said, “This is the sixth time that our group has organized a bike fundraising trip from Bassendean. Each year we get at least 100 riders and 20 support crew, and each rider gets their family, friends and work colleagues to sponsor them”.
Town of Bassendean Mayor, Cr Tina Klein JP, said, “Council is delighted that the organisers chose Sandy Beach Reserve as the starting point. It is a good cause, so the Town helped out by providing a farewell breakfast for all of the riders and support crew”.
Anyone who wishes to support this worthwhile fundraising cause can send donations to CanTeen.

Anzac Day Service a huge success
On a beautiful autumn morning on Saturday 25 April, over 800 people gathered at the Bassendean War Memorial to pay their respects to the men and women who died in defending our democratic way of life in all wars.
The service was coordinated by the Eastern Regional RSL Sub-Branch under the Presidency of Mr John Cox OAM JP. Mr Cox is also a Councillor of the Town of Bassendean.
One of the highlights was the attendance of the young men and women of the 57 Army Cadet Unit. The Unit attended the Dawn Service at King’s Park and then mounted a catafalque party at the Town’s memorial service and participated in the march through the streets of Bassendean.
The 57 Army Cadet Unit is now recruiting. If you are aged between 121/2 and 18 years and would like further details, contact Captain Sue Knight on 0410 526 235 or Lt Steve Allen on 0419 354 813, or come along to the Morley SHS any Wednesday night 6.30pm–9.30pm during the school term.
Cadets learn useful skills such as living in the field, navigation, radio procedure, first aid, survival, leadership and discipline, which helps mould young men and women into successful adults of the future.
