BIC Reserve Projects Update

One of the outcomes of the Town’s Enquiry-by-Design project is to consolidate the BIC Reserve sporting facilities within the eastern part of the Reserve to enable the establishment of community parklands within the western parts of the Reserve.

In recent years, some of the project milestones have included:

  • The establishment of new grass tennis courts;

  • The relocation of the Bassendean Tennis Club to the former croquet clubroom facility; and

  • The construction of a new public carpark that has been built between the grass tennis courts and the bowling greens.

In June 2008, the Bassendean Town Council decided to further progress the BIC Reserve Project by resolving to provide “in principle” support for the Town’s tennis facilities on the Reserve to comprise four grass courts, four synthetic hard courts and associated lighting and fencing. It is planned for this project to be undertaken in two stages.

Stage one has commenced and involves the construction of two new synthetic hard tennis courts, sports lighting and fencing. This stage of the project is progressing well and is currently on target to finish in May 2009.

Stage two is proposed to involve converting two existing grass courts to two synthetic hard tennis courts, sports lighting and fencing. This part of the project is being considered by Council within the 2009/10 financial year. External funding has been secured from the Department of Sport and Recreation, Tennis Australia and the Bassendean Tennis Club to assist with project costs.

A public artwork called Sun, Earth and Moon by Western Australian artist Jason Maxlow is also being established on the Reserve during May. It depicts the Fibonacci spiral; the number 3; the cycle of regenerations—birth, life and death—and the sequencing, unfurling and connecting of us to the system of the universe in perfect synchronicity.

Plants to residents

The Town of Bassendean is offering native plant seedlings at the highly subsidised price of just 50 cents each.

To take advantage of the opportunity to showcase some of Western Australia’s unique flora in your garden, simply bring your rates notice or a document which provides proof of residency within the Town, (i.e. driver’s licence) to:

Men of the Trees at St Barbe Grove, corner of Amherst Rd and Stirling Crescent, Hazelmere from 9.00 am till 12 noon on Saturday 20th June and Sunday 21st June.

Species available through the plants to residents program have been chosen for their suitability to domestic gardens. Native plants can be used just as effectively in a range of garden settings as exotics, however they use less water and fertilisers and provide better habitat for local birds and other flora. A well-designed and tended native garden not only looks good, but it’s good for our local environment.

Please be aware that a limited number of each plant species has been ordered and it is possible that due to demand throughout the program, your selection may not be available at the time of purchase. A limit of 100 seedlings per household applies.

If you would like to view available seedlings once they have reached maturity, a display is located in the Town of Bassendean Library foyer or alternatively a species list is available on the Town of Bassendean website with a link to flora base to view the species.

Household hazardous waste collection

Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days are now being held throughout Perth for residents to safely dispose of hazardous items which must not go to landfill. You can take up to 20 kg / 20 L of items to any of the scheduled HHW collection days, not just to the collection days held individually by the member councils of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council.

The HHW collection days are open from 9.00 am – 1.00 pm at various locations throughout the metropolitan area. An updated list of upcoming collection days is available at: www.wastenet.net.au/programs/hhwprog/index.html. The following items can be disposed of:

  • pesticides/herbicides
  • flammables
  • paints and thinners/solvents
  • batteries
  • household acids and alkalis
  • gas bottles
  • compact fluorescent lamps and fluorescent tubes; and
  • pool chemicals.

Please note that motor oil can only be disposed of at the Town of Bassendean household hazardous waste collection days and the next one is on Saturday 6 June 2009 from 9.00 am – 1.00 pm at the Depot, 69 Scaddan Street, Bassendean.

Please also note that computers will no longer be accepted at any of the EMRC HHW collection days after June 2009, however, see below for details of the Apple® e-waste recycling event on 6 and 7 June 2009.

Apple® E-Waste Recycling Event

The EMRC is working with Apple® and Infoactive Group to implement a metropolitan-wide electronic waste (e-waste) recycling event in Perth on 6 and 7 June from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm on both days.

The EMRC and the City of Swan will host one of eight locations providing free e-waste drop-off sites for residents, schools and small business. The City of Swan Operations Centre on Bishop Road was selected by EMRC as the best location in Perth’s Eastern Region as a collection point because of its central location to the rest of the region, its close proximity to major roads and the size of the centre.

The metropolitan wide event, being coordinated by Apple®, will provide an environmentally responsible disposal option for unwanted electronic items. Apple® will pay for the recycling of all brands of equipment collected over the weekend. Some other locations include the City of Stirling Operation Centre and the City of South Perth Lesser Hall. Residents will be able to take their unwanted electronic goods to any of the locations around the city.

All brands of computer equipment, home office equipment, electronic games and toys, and entertainment equipment (eg, TV’s, videos, stereos, etc) will be accepted. Items that will not be accepted for recycling include chemical waste, broken CRTs or those removed from their case, white goods and other household appliances.

At any time, residents can take limited amounts of e-waste to the Red Hill Waste Management Facility (please note that a recycling fee is payable).

More details on the Apple® e-waste recycling event will be provided on the EMRC website in the coming weeks. For more information, please contact Rebecca Smith, Market Development Officer on (08) 9424 2220 or Rebecca.Smith@emrc.org.au.
